As a prelude to my analysis of Poe’s short story, my handout has a brief introduction to the writer. The themes, plot, irony, characters, and symbolism of “Ligeia” are then discussed.
My handout, which has blanks that your students can fill in, is suitable for a homework assignment or as an in-class activity. You may also want to incorporate some information (such as the symbolism of the names of the two women in Poe’s story, which in its depth is unique to my handout) in your own lecture notes or other class activities.
An answer key is provided on a separate page at the end of the handout.
