PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Your students will never forget the names of the various cell parts again! This activity aligns with Virginia Science SOL 5.5. Students will create edible models of both a plant and animal cell. To prepare for the activity, create "cell kits" by placing the following in a small plastic bag:

-1/2 of a graham cracker
-One sugar cookie
-Four pretzel sticks
-Two Twizzler strips (peel-apart)
-Three green Tic-Tacs
-Two Whoppers
-One large marshmallow
-Two small marshmallows

Divide your students into partners, then give each partner pair a plate with one scoop of icing (I like to use pink!), a spoon, and one "cell kit." Together, students will use the activity sheet to build the cell models together. Supplemental questions follow to ensure that students can identify and describe each cell part, as well as the differences between plant and animal cells. Depending on the length of your science block, this activity may need to be divided into two days.
