In this activity, students will be using gummy candies to simulate the Rock Cycle! It is a fun activity that most students seem to greatly enjoy, while teaching not only the rock types, but how they form!
The steps followed are:
-- First, they will compress the candies to form a sedimentary rock.
-- Then, the student will again compress and briefly heat the candy mass to create a metamorphic "rock".
-- Finally, the student will heat their "rock" for several minutes using hot water, until it melts, to form an igneous "rock".
There are questions along the way, reinforcing the rocks at each step, and asking the student to draw what they see. Furthermore, there are questions and puzzles at the end of the assignment, to reinforce their new knowledge and vocabulary. The reading on the first page -- as well as the chart on the second -- provide all of the information, with examples, for students to think their way through the questions asked of them.
