Don't let those piles of ungraded essays get you down - simplify the scoring process with this AMAZING ARGUMENT ESSAY RUBRIC!

Start the school year off "write" with a time-saving product that you are sure to use over and over again, throughout the year!

This customized rubric can be used to score argumentative essays at the high school level (grades 9-12).
It can also be adapted for use at the middle school level (grades 6-8).

It includes four scoring categories:
1. Content and Analysis – covers claim and overall ability of the essay to maintain a persuasive position.
2. Text Evidence – cover appropriate use, selection and citation of text evidence throughout the essay.
3. Organization – covers essay structure, and evaluates the strength of specific essay components, including introduction, body paragraphs, counterclaim and conclusion.
4. Conventions – covers writing conventions, including spelling, grammar, sentence structure and use of formal tone.

Designed for ease of use, for both educators and students, this detailed rubric includes specific elements that can be circled or highlighted, in order to provide students with clear feedback or next steps for writing improvement and mastery. Written comments can also be included on the bottom, or back of the page, if necessary.

The document is completely editable and customizable, using Microsoft Word – you may choose to grade students using a standards-based 1-4 scale, the points system (grade with rubric, and add up points for final score) or both. Point values for each rubric category can be adjusted to suit your own scoring/grading needs. It is currently set up for a 100-point scale.

Please make sure to write in the number of sources your specific writing task requires in the space provided in the “Text Evidence” category.
