Single point rubrics are the best for students! You can use them as an evaluative tool OR a self-reflection tool for your students. I have found that this helps boost my students writing extremely. Highly recommend it.

This rubric is separated into FOUR different categories in which I evaluate my students writing. Each category has about 3-5 attributes I am scoring.

1) Introduction

2)Body Paragraphs

3) Conclusion

4) Writing Conventions/Format

Everything is Common Core aligned and editable. This specific Rubric was created for a 4th Grade NGSS Writing Assignment about Animal Adaptations.

You can easily edit this document to fit your needs.

BONUS!!! There are SIX Animals listed at the bottom of the google doc that I have provided with Research Links in which your students can use to read about their own animal and their adaptations in order to write their research essay. This will save you A LOT of time find resources. If you are doing an animal research essay, I highly recommend this product!!

Use a model to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways. Emphasis is on systems of information transfer. Assessment does not include the mechanisms by which the brain stores and recalls information or the mechanisms of how sensory receptors function.
NGSS4-LS1-1
Construct an argument that plants and animals have internal and external structures that function to support survival, growth, behavior, and reproduction. Examples of structures could include thorns, stems, roots, colored petals, heart, stomach, lung, brain, and skin. Assessment is limited to macroscopic structures within plant and animal systems.
Provide a concluding statement or section related to the information or explanation presented.
Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the topic.
