This self-edit checklist is designed to be executed in 4 phases, looking closely at "Big Ideas," evidence, analysis, and language/mechanics.
I see the greatest improvements in student writing when I require students to submit one phase of the writing process at a time to ensure quality of the self edit and make minor suggestions along the way. Often, I will print a single paragraph from each student's paper four times, then students will attack their paragraph with each phase of the editing checklist. When complete with the process, students redraft the paragraph including all their suggestions and adjustments to discover a well developed and more polished product!
