One of the best ways to ensure that your students understand the editing process is to provide them with a basic checklist to guide their editing. This checklist covers the four basic areas of editing: punctuation, grammar, capitalization, and spelling.
After modeling the use of this checklist, it is easy to let students use it to guide their own editing, so that they do not get lost in the process. Included in this checklist is a column for self-editing, where students can check their own paper first, and a peer-editing column, where students can provide comments or suggestions while reading a peer's paper.
This checklist seeks to teach the process of editing in a more successful way, by providing students with the steps they need to follow to get through the lengthy process. Use this checklist for a variety of writing, as it is generic enough to do so.
