Editing practice to correct for punctuation and learn about interesting books! Over 100 short paragraphs about books, organized by season, will capture student interest, improve writing and editing skills, and teach punctuation rules in context. The paragraphs are reviews of adventure, mystery, fantasy, historical and realistic fiction books by beloved authors. All are award-winners or have positive reviews for grades 5-8. Titles for the beginning of school, fall, winter, spring and before summer break. Answer keys include a few grammar rules that apply to the corrected passages. Aligned with Common Core Standards. Combines all of my popular individual products (see below) for a terrific value.
The 103 page packet includes:
--chart of basic proofreading marks and an edited sample passage for a model
--100 passages to edit, 2-4 passages per page (see the thumbnails and a sample in the Preview). Organized to use throughout the year, the sections are: back to school, fall, winter, popular general titles, friendship, month of March, and summer vacation (for use before school is out).
-- answer key with corrected passages and several applicable grammar rules for each passage (See a sample in the Preview)
--an Editing Improvement Log: a 2 pg chart for students to record the types of errors they make (comma, capital letter, etc.) and the applicable rule; helpful to increase awareness of frequent errors and to reinforce rules
-- a "Sounds Good" general handout for students to make note of any titles they hear about (via this activity or any other source) and would like to check out
--tips for the teacher with options for using and evaluating the passages
--list of Common Core Standards: Meets Language/ELA Literacy.1 and .2 and Writing/ELA Literacy W.5 for 4-8.
Use one passage (cut them apart) or the full page for warm-ups/bell work, for exit slips, for task cards for a center, for partners/groups, or for early finishers. Perfect for a quick assessment of grammar skills. Use multiple pages for independent classwork, editing or grammar mini-lessons, or homework. Teacher ideas for use and evaluation are included.
All punctuation marks have been omitted for 5th to 8th graders to provide commas, apostrophes, capitals, end marks, hyphens, colons, and more, covering over 30 rules. Students are challenged to decide where it makes sense to place a period. Common spelling errors (a lot, their/there/they're, too/to/two) are also included.
Examples of authors: Walter Dean Myers, Jeff Kinney, James Patterson, Wilson Rawls, Rodman Philbrick, and Gary Paulsen. Mix of plots appealing to both girls and boys.
