Product Description
Students edit short passages using a few simple proofreader marks plus learn about popular books. A dozen spooky, scary, mystery titles for grades 6-8. Three formats for your needs, including task cards or worksheets. Perfect for teaching grammar skills in context. Great for Halloween (especially if it falls on a school day), but many students love these titles year-round. [Not recommended for 5th or below due to the mature content of the books.]

Together the passages provide practice with capitalization, end marks, apostrophe (contractions/possessives), common spelling errors, commas, quotation marks and more. As a challenge for middle school writers, a hint is given if students are to use an advanced mark, such as ellipsis, dash, hyphen, or slash.

This comprehensive packet includes:
--chart of five proofreader marks for students to use
--a sample passage edited using proofreader marks (see the Preview)
--12 short passages for students to correct
--3 formats: enlarged, one passage per page for projection; task cards, two per page, to cut in half for stations or bell work slips; or worksheets with three passages per page for homework or assessment
--complete answer key with selected grammar rules that apply to the passage (see the Preview)
--detailed teacher tips for using the passages with ideas for management, grading, book shares, and more
--plus a handout for students to list books from this handout or any other source that "Sound Good" that they want to check out.

Great for individual seat work, bell work/warm-ups, assessment, partners, centers, homework, enrichment, homework, early finishers, or whole class mini-lessons with guided/independent practice.

Sample titles include: The Graveyard Book, Cirque du Freak, Professor Gargoyle, Ghost of Graylock, Howl's Moving Castle--see the thumbnails for more. Twelve total.
