My ELA students in both grades keep a 2-subject notebook. In one notebook section, they complete the activators (in a four week rotation - daily editing, daily revision, free-writes, reading exercises). The other section of the notebook is for drafting, for reading questions, and for fun writing, which they can do anytime they have an extra few mintues. The notebook sections are tabbed.
For their editing section, we reserve several pages at the beginning for editing rules. As we come upon rules in our Daily Edit, we add them into the Activator section of the notebooks for reference. I wait until the Editing Rules comes up in the practice before I hand out the Rule for it. For instance, I wait until there's a semi-colon in the Edit for handing out the Rule for Semi-Colons. I also copy and cut the rules down so they are easier to tape into the notebooks.
This particular resource has the Capitalization Rules and Comma Rules, two of which come up early in our editing work.
