This New York Writing proofreading strategy is the best! It allows students to isolate their editing work in the areas of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, spelling, and formatting. It also provides instructors with an instant visual assessment on proofreading skills. This strategy pushes students to slow down and re-read their written work through multiple lenses, and multiple times. In my classroom, this strategy is an expectation and requirement before progressing toward publishing.
We use Twistable colored pencils since they don't need to be sharpened and show up more clearly than crayons. I recommend having a backup supply of colored media for troubleshooting. :) This template is printed in both color and black and white for high quality printing, and class sets too. My students attach this handout inside their writing folder, desk, and homework folder. Parents love this strategy too! Enjoy and happy teaching!!
