Get students to focus on ways to improve their writing by selecting more interesting words to use. After students draft a writing piece, have them complete this word choice activity using a thesaurus.
Directions for the activity: Get rid of those BORING, overused words in your writing. Find words in your writing like: mad, sad, happy, said, went, and walked. Circle them and write them on this organizer. Then use a thesaurus to look up other more vivid and interesting words to replace them with. Select three or more words from the thesaurus and place them on the chart, then go back in your writing to see which one is the best fit.
