With this project students are busy learning about one type of primary document (editorial and political cartoons) and even creating their own.
Soon you could easily have a bulletin board filled with original editorial or political cartoons made by your students, notebooks with several project items displayed, and students busy teaching others about these cartoons in small groups.
The Editorial and Political Cartoon project was designed to encourage students to research and learn about these types of cartoons and to present that learning through a mini paper, analysis of several cartoons, creation of their own political or editorial cartoon, and teaching small groups about them.
The created project notebook becomes an opportunity for portfolio or other alternative assessment.
Originally this project was designed for use with eighth grade United States history students who needed more opportunities to use higher level thinking skills but it could be easily altered to use with a total class or even as a series of lessons with assignments.
This project packet includes the following:
Teacher notes with goals, background, altering ideas, and display ideas
Student packet with overview, assignments, resource possibilities, and three grading rubrics
So, just put the due dates in the assignment area, make any alterations you wish to the packet, and your students are ready to learn more about historical and political events through these cartoons.
