This project aligns with the Alberta grade 10 English Language Arts curriculum. It asks students to develop theme statements related to conformity as portrayed within the film, and then to create an alternative film poster (or other creative visual) that demonstrates that theme. The assignment asks students to complete a written piece that describes the theme, provides evidence of that theme from the film, and then explains how the visual demonstrates the theme. I have not included my rubric, because the rubric is a hybrid of the Alberta Grade 12 Diploma exam rubrics for the Personal Response to text and the Visual Response. This project could be adapted to other texts (both visual and not). The assignment sheet includes a link to a blog that contains a number of artist tributes to the film - many of these tributes provide good exemplars of symbolic representations of themes within the film.
