Edward the Emu by Sheena Knowles is a wonderful book to use during language therapy! This companion was designed to go along with the book and it supports a variety of receptive and expressive language skills. Including:
Sequencing: Print and laminate the sequencing map on Page 3 and the story tiles on page 4. Add velcro. Students retell the story using this fun activity!
Comprehension: There are 18 question cards that check comprehension at all levels!
Emu Pronouns: This cute card game features Edward and his new friend Edwina and addresses “he” and “she.” Students draw a card and fill in the blank with the correct pronoun. If they are correct they get to keep the card. If they find two emus.. well, that’s better than one and they get to take an extra turn! Student with the most cards wins.
Zookeeper Says…. This card game focuses on multistep directions that are embedded with temporal concepts. Student draws a card and follows the direction. If they find a special card they get to take an extra turn!
Zoo rhymes: This cute card game features zoo animals and rhyming words from the book. Play as a memory game and have students hunt for rhymes or have students draw cards and produce rhyming words.
