How effective are the antiseptics and disinfectants that we use everyday? One of the best things about taking a biology class is growing bacteria. All students love it! In this lab students will observe the effect that different antiseptics and disinfectants have upon the growth of bacteria.
I use this lab in my Biology I classes, but it can easily be used for a middle school science class, or a more advanced Biology class.
1. To learn to grow bacteria on agar in a Petri dish.
2. To learn aseptic technique when working with bacteria.
3. To test the effectiveness of disinfectants and antiseptics upon the growth of bacteria.
Materials required for this lab are: Three Petri dishes of nutrient agar, Bacteria spreader, Sharpie markers, Distilled water, Filter paper disks, Masking tape, Forceps, 2 disinfectants, Metric Ruler, 2 antiseptics, Isopropyl alcohol and Soil sample.
Your download will include a lab that is ready to be copied and passed out to your students. The student copy is a 4 page handout. Students can write on these handouts to fill in their data and answer all questions. I have also included all answers for the teacher, as well as teacher preparation notes for setting up this lab.
I have included both a pdf version and a Word document for your use.
