Do you have students with selective memory that can NEVER seem to remember that you specifically taught them how to write a thesis statement or a topic sentence? I do, which is why I created this handout. It specifically lays out what TO and NOT TO do when writing a thesis statement and topic sentences, while providing the students with a variety of formats to use, so they have some kind of "formula" assistance, but they also have choice for what will best suit their purpose.
When I copy my writing handouts for my students, I color code them; this handout is green, so when my students are in the beginning stages of writing their papers, I can tell them, "Take out your GREEN sheet," and they all know exactly what I'm referring to.
This handout is effectively used for initial writing instruction, then it continues to be a useful resource throughout the year and beyond. I have students who have gone to college and emailed me asking for a copy of it to help them with their papers, and I've had fellow teachers email me asking, "What is the 'green sheet' your kids keep asking for?"
