Efren Divided | Figurative Language Sort

- PDF

Description
This resource is designed to give students hands-on practice sorting four types of figurative language seen in the novel, Efren Divided, by Ernesto Cisneros: 1) Simile; 2) Metaphor; 3) Hyperbole; and 4) Personification.
How To Use This Resource:
- First, cut out the Header and Figurative Language Cards. (You may choose to laminate them or print them out on cardstock to increase durability.)
- Have students sort the Figurative Language Cards into the respective categories under the Header Cards.
- Answers could be checked by the teacher or by the students themselves, using the answer key that is included.
Bonus: After students correctly sort the cards, ask them to complete the Figurative Language Extension Activity Sheet for as many examples from the sort as you’d like.
- Here, students explain the literal and figurative meanings of the example, use it in an original sentence, and illustrate it.
Ways to Differentiate:
- Students work independently or in pairs
- Choose which Header Cards to use (with or without the definitions)
- Focus on only two figurative language types at a time
- Complete the sort as a shared activity where the teacher guides the learning
This Resource Includes:
- an About This Resource page
