In this lesson for Easter, students will practice decoding two syllable words with long vowel sounds.
First, the students will review syllables with a sorting game and review vowels as a class.
Next, the students will learn a chant to help them decode two syllable words. The students will use the chant to "crack" words that are written on eggs into two parts. Based on the split, the students will decide whether to use a long or short vowel sound for each part of the word to help them read it correctly. A student will be chosen to reveal the correct "crack" or split on the egg using watercolors.
The students will be assessed on their knowledge of decoding two syllable words with long vowels at the end of the lesson.
This activity includes flashcards, the chant, handouts, an assessment, a reflection, a rubric, and a teacher recording tool.
