This resource includes 2 Ancient Egypt activites: A Travel Brochure & "Important Book" template. Perfect for any 6th grade teacher looking to make social studies a bit more hands on and creative!
Ancient Egypt Travel Brochure
Copy the travel brochure back-to-back on legal size paper (8.5 x 14). The paper is then folded accordion style to appear as a travel brochure would. Students fill in each section with information related to: geography, economy, religion, government, and things to do & see. I encourage students to modernize certain aspects (create restaurants, attractions, tours, etc . The goal is to persuade tourists to visit by using names and words from ancient times. EX: King Tut's Tacos, etc.)
***Pages 4 - 7 give different variations for a front cover.
I provide my class with the following directions & grading scale:
Design a trifold travel brochure that would encourage people to visit. Each section (except the cover page) should have 2 – 5 paragraphs detailing the heading. Information can be found in you social studies text, books, magazines, and the internet. Fill the blank spaces with illustrations.
60% quality of the information
30% writing – sentence & paragraph construction
10% presentation & creativity
Printing Instructions: To print on legal size paper, go into printer properties, select paper size (legal 8.5 x 14), and save before printing.
"Important Book" Template
Directions: Have students use their texts and other sources to list 9 facts about each topic. They will then choose the fact they believe to be the MOST important to list first, & that fact is also repeated last. In between, students should list the remaining 8 facts that relate to each topic.
The topics include: pyramids, king Tut, hieroglyphics, mummification, pharaohs, Ra, Hatshepsut, the Sphinx, the Nile and a blank page you can use for any topic of your choice! I’ve also included an alternative cover (pg. 13).
Teaching Tip: I generally introduce the structure with the topic “Shoes”. We list 9 facts about shoes. Then, we pick the most important, and rewrite our facts following this formula. After that example, they have usually have the hang of it.
