This is a book we will be reading as a class next year. The whole grade level decided and you know me, gotta have a reading reflection to go with it. I designed this journal with Universal Design Elements in mind: I have areas for Gifted Students, as you can see by my use of the Icons of Depth and Complexity, but also areas for the Special Education students, such as simple retells. I have parts for visual learners, graphic organizers built in. This is meant as individual assignment but can easily be adapted for group work for a greater level of success for all types of learners.
It can also be a teacher's guide book, something to shove on the overhead to help students write more freely in their spiral notebooks. There are two sections where I highlight compare and contrasting and give students the graphic organizer to achieve that. There are two sections were students can work on cause and effect, including deeper thinking of antecedent events and aftermath. I tried to reflect the structure of the book to build greater student success.
If you are looking to read this book in class, getting this journal is a no-brainer! :) Your lesson plans are done!
P.S. I even threw in some helpful websites where you can check out a video on things that occur in the book, like the Hippo Attack and the rite of passage...
