Description

THIS IS THE KINDERGARTEN VERSION =) Have you tried to make sense of the CCSS 8 Math Practice Standards? These posters provide the scaffolding our students need to help them grasp what these super important standards are all about!

I have worked for six months to adapt these standards to each grade level at my K-8 school, with lots of input from other teachers and math professionals at our County Office of Education.

What I have come up with for grades K, 1-2, and 3-5 is eight simplified statements, with longer explanations below, and the original wording at the bottom (they are listed separately because the clipart is specifically geared to the standards for each level).
Grades 6-8 are different - they include the simplified statements, but the large print below is the original wording.

Beginning in Kindergarten, our students will say these simplified statements at the beginning of each math lesson, with gestures (hat tip to Whole Brain Teaching for showing us the importance of standing and using gestures to engage all areas of our brains). As our students move through our K-8 school, these practice standards will become so ingrained in their math learning that they will look at every math lesson to see which practices they are using! Imagine what will happen when all of our students are thinking about their thinking... I can't wait =)

Please note the picture that shows how the 8 math practice standards are used in my third grade classroom at the beginning of each new standard. We brainstorm about how each relates to the specific standard. I then take a picture of our work and print it on ledger paper so that we can continue to add to it as we work through each lesson. I plan to save these in a binder to go back and refer to.

This download includes:
-Cover Page
-Posters of 8 Mathematical Practice Standards (I print these on ledger paper, which makes them the perfect size to line up on your whiteboard (see picture).
-One page list of standards
-Cards to cut (4 to a page) and have students keep on a ring (I print these on card stock and laminate.)

####Your download will be in jpeg format. I chose to do this because the colors are more vivid. If your computer doesn't allow you to print them in the temporary file that they open in, simply move them to your desktop to print!####

This has been a huge labor of love for my students and my school, and I welcome your feedback!

Happy Math Teaching,
Denise from Light Bulbs and Laughter
