This is a lesson I usually pull out for Holocaust Remembrance week. It takes a few days as this is a serious subject that takes time to go over with students. There is an informational article followed by poetry explication, a creative project as well as a modern tie-in to 9/11.
Included with this packet:
• The text of “The Poetry of Bearing Witness” by Howard Richard Debs with close reading questions that require students cite actual textual evidence for most of the answers they give. The questions are designed to focus readers on finding their answers in the text and be able to use the text to support any of those answers.
• The text of three Ekphrastic Poems written by Howard Richard Debs about images of the Holocaust. Poetry Explication questions are included with the text of each poem.
• The text of “The Names” by Billy Collins written about the victims of 9/11. Poetry Explication questions are included with the text of the poem.
• Final creative project.
• Answer Key for all questions are included.
