On October 1, 2017, 43 percent of the registered voters in Catalonia (Cataluña) voted in a referendum to determine the path forward for this autonomous community that is part of Spain. 90 percent of the voters that participated voted for Cataluña to be independent of Spain. The federal government declared the vote illegal, and there were violent clashes between the national police and the mossos (Catalán police) and civilians as the national police shut down voting centers. The issue of Catalan independence has a long, complicated, and violent history. This was not the first such referendum, nor will it likely be the last.
This product contains a 22 page slideshow written entirely in Spanish that is appropriate for students in mid Spanish 1 that comfortable working with learner texts.
