This is a target-language communicative activity designed for late first-year or anytime second-year language learners, but one that could also be adapted to challenge higher-level students. Great for the end of a unit on the town and going places! Students interact and negotiate in the target language as they travel around town to shop and accomplish their goals.
It takes one or two days of prep (for the kids, not the teacher), and one day for the simulation. The teacher gets to walk around and enjoy listening to the students using the target language. [Token chips can be used among the students to police native language use. Each starts the game with four chips, and has to surrender a chip to anyone catching him speaking the native language. Then at the end of the game the chips can be used for prizes or extra credit.]
