"El Cuerpo - head and face” is the second in my series of Visual Mnemonics for Spanish.
Mnemonic devices have been shown to aid in recall, and visual mnemonics can be particularly effective, since humans are very visual creatures. I work hard to create memorable images that interact or are closely linked with each Spanish word, thereby forming a visual association between word and meaning.
With the exception of the interactive notebook page, no English words are included, as this packet focuses on visual memory. Instead of having to perform a mental translation of an English word to a Spanish word and then also associate meaning, the student is instead cued to internalize meaning while learning the word. Some images contain additional details for reference−for example the image for teeth includes most of a monster’s head−so you may need to initially indicate the appropriate meaning.
Internalization of the meaning is further enhanced by activities such as coloring, flash cards, and matching games.
12 visual mnemonics (words with associated images) focused on the head and face are used throughout the package.
Posters: Each visual mnemonic comes on its own 8.5x11- sized sheet with visually stimulating background colors. Ideal for posting on the walls or as decorations.
Flashcards: With a visual mnemonic on one side and just the plain word on the other, these flash cards enforce internalization of meaning. 8.5x11-sized sheets, with cutting lines make creating flashcards a breeze (each sheet has four words).
Cut, Color and Paste Match-ups: Images and text are presented as outlines for coloring (four per page). Words are separate, so students can cut them out and paste the word onto the matching image.
Mix-up: Students draw a line between the images and the matching words.
Coloring pages: Outlines on a background graphic—ideal for coloring. Each image-word pair is presented in large size on its own 8.5x11 inch sheet. To save paper 3 pages with four image-word pairs per page are included. Each of the three pages has a different background for added interest.
Interactive notebook page: Students cut and fold along the lines to create flaps, then glue the flaps in the indicated spot over the Spanish visual mnemonics. Blank flaps for writing practice, and flaps with English words.
