GRIM FANDANGO STYLE DIA DE LOS MUERTOS DAY OF THE DEAD 3D ANIMATION SHORT FILM
This is a 4 or 5 day unit plan to help students learn about the Day of the Dead celebration. Included are:
Powerpoint Vocabulary presentation - (a) the words are mixed around so that the students have to stay on task to know exactly what word is being defined; (b) the vocab sheet is a study tool as well, when the students take down the vocabulary words they leave the 2 inner columns blank, and later fold the paper in half to work on remembering the English by only looking at the Spanish and vice versa
TPRS Powerpoint - I first use the story script and only the pictures to tell the story, then the powerpoint goes into a duplicate set of slides, but this time script is on the pictures
Story Fill In - This is a fill in the blank story script, there is a wordbank, and the majority of the missing words are vocabulary words
Story Cut Out - This activity is done in pairs in my classroom. The students cut out 18 parts of the story and they have to put the story in the correct order
1/2 sheet of comprehension questions - I use this sheet after the first time I tell the story. The comprehension questions are in English, and I have them answer in English.
Lastly, I play the youtube video and I read the script while the short film is playing. The second time through, I pause the video at various points, and I ask the class to tell me words or sentences in Spanish that come to mind with the image that is frozen on the screen.
I didn't include a page for a story rewrite, but this can be a summative assessment at the end of the 4 days. All I have the students do is take a blank sheet of paper, fold it into 6 boxes, draw a simple picture and write a Spanish sentence that corresponds with the drawing they have created.
So an example of the story re-write may be;
stick figure of a girl standing next to a tomb stone - sentence reads (Hay una muchacha. La muchacha está cerca de la tumba.)
stick figure of a girl handing a taller girl a flower - (La muchacha le da una flor a su mamá.)
I explain that the story re-write does not have to include every detail, and that they should use as few supports (vocab sheet, etc.) as possible to show what they have learned.
I hope your students enjoy this as much as mine do! I use this with my level 1 & 2 students.
I didn´t write the number of pages because there are 6 different handouts and 2 PPT presentations. The vocabulary PPT presentation is 23 slides, and the story PPT presentation is 48 slides.
