This pack contains EVERYTHING (and then some!) that you may need to promote proficiency and engage your students using Season 1 of El Internado.
El Internado is a popular Spanish television series that involves mystery, romance, surprised, and (most importantly) TONS of useful, comprehensible Spanish for high school students.
Showing El Internado in my Level 5 classes (although it can easily be adapted for lower levels) has easily been the BEST curriculum decision I've ever made! My students LOVE watching the episodes and they use the vocabulary and structures ALL the time! (What more could I ask for?) On their end of year reflections, every single one of them said that El Internado was their favorite and the most helpful thing that we did in class to help them with their speaking proficiency, listening comprehension, and overall confidence and level of comfort with the language. Students WANT to watch El Internado and talk about it-- It engages students like nothing else I've encountered.
El Internado is available on Netflix, which is awesome because it's easy to access and to review portions that we need to rewatch. Also, so many of my students have been obsessed with El Internado and they've finished the entire series (7 seasons!) on their own! (Working on Spanish in their free time!) It's also available on eBay, which is where I got my hard copy. I much prefer watching on Netflix though.
How I use El Internado in class:
-We worked with (not just "watched", but really "worked with") the first season over the course of the entire school year. We completed a thematic unit and then would watch one episode of El Internado over the course of 5-6 class periods (50 minute periods) in between each unit. I finish the school year by watching the final episode and using it review vocabulary and grammatical structures.
-I break down an episode in 10-15 segments to make it comprehensible for students.
-We watch each segment 2-3 times.
-The first time without subtitles (I want them to really listen and see what they can catch.) I tell my students they are NOT to work on the comprehension guide/questions while we are watching.
-The second time, I turn on the Spanish subtitles. As I rewind the segment and switch on the subtitles (doesn't take long), students know to read through the comprehension questions to be able to focus on what info to listen for.
-The third time, I generally turn off the subtitles. If there is a section that's really fast or challenging, I will switch the subtitles on quickly.
Included in "El Internado Season 1 Viewing Pack":
-Introduction activities to the characters
-Preview video of the series to capture student interest
-Selected vocabulary/structures for each section
-Vocabulary practice activities
-Cloze readings to review structures and vocabulary and to make sure that students understand what's happening before we move on
-Review activities that require students to view screenshots of the episode and describe (using vocab and recalling events) what happened/happens in each scene
*There are some words/phrases that you may choose to pass over with your students or that would not be in concordance with school guidelines. I have put these in RED so that you can easily catch them and remove them if you like.
Both the PDF and DOC versions are included for easy editing. The font used is: KG What the Teacher Wants.
I will be presenting at WAFLT in Appleton, WI in November 2016 on how I use El Internado and other TV series/telenovelas to promote proficiency in the classroom. I hope to see you there!
This is a great resource for any who is homeschooling teens/young adults or for anyone who is simply looking to brush up on or maintain their Spanish communicative abilities.
PLEASE let me know what questions you have or how I can assist you in bringing this AMAZING series to your classroom! I've really enjoyed putting these resources together and can't wait to hear how much your students will love El Internado!
