El Norte is an immigration story but also makes connections to the Silent Holocaust that occurred in Guatemala during the Mayan Genocide..The movie is in Spanish but has English subtitles. Can be viewed on You Tube or Netflix. Great way to make connections to Social Studies and current events (immigration), all in the target language. I have parents sign consent forms since they are some vulgar words in the beginning of the movie. I fast forwards those parts. The vulgar words in Spanish are not that horrific, but the English translation on the subtitles is.The movie is a foreign film and is not rated. I would assume that the rating would be PG 13.
El Norte bundle contains:
Movie viewing sheet (20 questions for students to answer with a partner while viewing the film). Pair share activity
Discussion questions for after the movie. I like to group students to work on the discussions questions and then share with other group.
Webquest can be done prior to the movie to make connections to the Mayan Genocide or after the movie. Either way it works well and makes connections to Social Studies while remaining in the target language.
Grammar worksheet (Fill in the blanks with Preterit or Imperfect) loosely based on the movie and genocide.
All materials are also sold separately at my TPT store and are in PDF format. Keys are included.
