Instead of giving the students endings of the preterit tense directly, I taught it in context. Learning the preterit in context helped them remember the endings. After reading a few examples of verbs conjugated in the preterit tense for the yo form, we went over the meaning of the bolded words - the past indicatives. Then, I asked them to identify the verbs they recognize. Afterwards, I also asked to state whether they noticed any differences with the endings of the verbs. Finally, we went through the rest of the worksheet together. After noticing an ending, they started to conjugate AR verbs right away. As we did each form, we were building the conjugation chart together. We did majority of the worksheet together as a class. For this class they were not allow to speak in English.
