PPT in PDF format for the popular legend "El Sombrerón". PPT starts with a pre-reading activity, followed by the legend and ends with discussion questions and a writing prompt. I have several students that are Guatemalan and they said their family members all knew of this legend. It's very popular in Guatemala. Great addition to any Guatemala Unit.
As students read along the legend on the PPT they have to list the verbs that are in the Preterit and Imperfect. I usually have them work with a partner. In addition, it's a great opportunity to discuss "palabras agudas" that carry the accent on the last syllable and end with "n".
Activities for students to review the legend would be a story map or sequence chart and character trait graphic organizer which are easily found online.
As a closing activity I have students discuss the legend. Discussion questions are also included in the PPT. I also have student indicate the morale of the story on exit cards.
The following day, as a Do Now, I have students discuss what they thought was the morale to the story. Then working in a group, students write their own legend. Great creative writing activity and grammar review since they will be required to use the Preterit and Imperfect.
