PPT in PDF format contains vocabulary, reading comprehension questions, writing prompt and a project for students. Also makes connections to another story also written by Gabriel García Márquez. I like students to read three different stories from the same author in order to give them a better insight into the author's literary style.
The three stories I like for them to read are "El ahogado más hermoso del mundo", "La viuda de Montiel" and lastly "La siesta del martes." The first one gives them an insight to magical realism. "The second story gives them a look at the political corrupción in Colombia and the era called "La Violencia" which makes connections to history. Lastly, "La siesta del martes" demostrates how Gabriel García Márquez criticizes society and the church. It gives the students a well rounded look into the many themes authors use in their works.
I also have students compare and contrast all three stories using a three circle Venn graphic organizer. As a formal assessment I have students use the stories and their Venn diagram to write a composition in which they discuss how Gabriel García Márquez's stories are diversified.
Recommeneded level would be Spanish Honors, Spanish AP and Spanish for native speakers. Stories can be read in class as well as assigned for summer reading.
