This story is a good example of magical realism in which real incidents are distorted with magical elements. Helps students understand this type of literary style.
After reading the story and understanding magical realism, I have students work with a partner to write a short story using magical realism. They have to search the internet for current events, select one current event that happened in our town or city and then add magical elements to convert it into a magical realism story. Great creative writing assignments that enables students to make connections to current events, build their vocabulary and apply grammar points previously learned in class. Also promotes cooperative learning since they're working in groups of three.
