Handout contains 25 questions to review the short story "El árbol de oro" and one writing prompt. Appropriate reading level would be intermediate readers or advanced readers. Key is provided.
The appropriate level for this story would be Spanish 3, 4, 5, or native/heritage speakers. If I'm using this story for Spanish 3, I do pre-teach the vocabulary. If I use it for Spanish 4 or higher level, I truly do not need to pre-teach the vocabulary.
For Spanish 3 I do use many graphic organizers to help them fully comprehend the story (story map, sequence chart, etc).
For the high level students, I group them in group to discuss the story in the target language. As a closing activity, students share their thoughts with the class.
As a follow up activity, I have students summarize the story for HW.

I also use the audio for the story for all levels. I have them listen to the audio prior to reading the story and then ask them for the main idea of the story, describe the characters, describe the setting, etc. Afterwards, they read the story. If it's a Spanish 3 class, we read the story together, if it's a higher level, students read it with a partner.
