Packet consist of an article that explains why Puerto Ricans are scientifically considered the perfect human due to their unique mixture of three races; Taínos, Spanish and African which has produced what biologist are calling good DNA.
Article is divided into chunks with reading comprehension and a writing prompt. I used this activity for our Caribbean Unit and also have students watch a video clip for the Puerto Rican Parade in NYC easily found on You Tube. Great way to make connections to their Biology class since they're studying DNA.
To further enhance the lesson students can attend the library to fill in the time line. They would first research the following:
When did the Taino arrive in the Caribbean?
When did the Conquistadores arrive?
When did the African arrive?
When did the King of Spain grant permission for the Spanish men to marry the Taino and African women?
When did historian believe that the Tainos went extinct?
When was the DNA of Puerto Ricans studied?
