Another great short story by Matute for students to analyze and make connections. I have student research the internet for earthquakes or tsunamis that occurred in Spain or near Spain. It helps them realized what inspired the author to name the story "El Mar" and why everyone in the story was anxious to leave the town.
It's also a story about a little boy that has an unusual illness in which his ears are over grown. Students also look up the medical condition in the internet. Great character education story as well. Students then discuss the unfairness of bullying and what they can do if they see another student being victimized. In our school students report incidents to the principal as well as guidance. Most of the times bullying happens in the cafeteria or hallways. If students report an incident, security guards can check the cameras for evidence.
El Mar por Ana María Mature Bundle includes everything you will need to do a close reading activity with your students. The story is short but impressive. Great story to analyze and make connections.
