Begin by reviewing with your students the various elaboration strategies. Explain that their writing MUST contain 1-2 sentences of elaboration following their citation of evidence. The elaboration must be in their own words and explain the connection of their evidence to their topic. I always tell my students to think “why does my reader care about this evidence”?. This activity gives the students a piece of evidence that they must elaborate on in their own word. It requires the students to practice taking evidence and then clarifying it with their own voice. The students can use these cards to practice. I would complete 1 together as an example and then place the others around the room. Give each student a recording sheet, and have the students move around the room independently to complete the task.
