This is a fun lesson to be done with the whole class, in small groups, or independently. Students -- or shall I say detectives -- will answer elapsed time word problems in order to solve a mystery: Which teacher left a coffee spill outside the teachers' room?
Most of the problems involve figuring out elapsed time in 15, 30, or 60-minute increments. First your detectives will complete a simple worksheet that reviews the meaning of "hour" and "half-hour" and serves as a timeline to help solve the problems. They then read aloud cards with clues and record information in their charts.
Your class will have a blast trying to find out which of their beloved teachers left a big spill in the hallway!
