This is the first step to Make 60... add to 60.
Minutes to Hours is a Base 60 System.
Students need to compute the difference from provided minutes UP to the nearest hour.
This sheet is Level 1 - 10 Minute Increments to 60. Students should get to the black star on the answer key when they have mastered the skill in 5 minutes!!!
It just takes practice. The teacher can orally do this practice..."Name a value - for instance, 40...students reply with 20 to Make 60." This takes little practice, but the numeracy and number sense is amazing!
Students should master this skill to move on to Making 60 - Level 2.
Example: if a student is given 4:20 AM and asked to find the elapsed time to 6:10 AM. The first step is to compute the minutes to 5 AM. In this case, it is 40 minutes. Then, the problem is quite straight forward...hours to the hour in question...1 hour, in this case. 10 more minutes to 6:10 AM. Hence, the total elapsed time is 1 hour 50 minutes.
But, the student MUST Make 60 to be profiicient at this skill. It just takes practice. It is recommended the teacher include this skill in a daily Spaced Repetition System (SRS) each day. There is a white paper that explains this pedagogical process on this website that delves into details on this instructional method, if the eduacator is NOT familiar with it. It is a game changer in the classroom.
Best to you are your students.
