Description

This activity, aligned with Common Core standard 2.MD.1, shows students how elapsed time problems are created and how they can be solved using a number line.

It provides students with information about the three important pieces of information in elapsed time word problems: Start Time, Change in Time, and End Time. It also provides examples about how the intervals on a time number line can change.

Once students can solve problems, they have an opportunity to create their own word problems. Creating their own word problems, allows students to see how these word problems are structured so that they can later answer them correctly.

3.MD.1 Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
