Introduce students to the elastic clause, why it was included in the constitution, and how it led to two different political parties. Students read a series of quotes from Hamilton and Jefferson to understand the key differences between the political parties. Students must put the quotes in their own words for various categories including their view of the public, how to govern people, and more. Finally, students use the information to engage in a debate between the two political parties. I used the lesson over the course of two days, but you can also assign the readings as homework if you want to do it in one day.
