This unit focuses on the article,“Eleanor Roosevelt”, by William Jay Jacobs, along with corresponding film clips, text dependent questions (TDQs), and short response questions to help cover multiple ELA standards. Each unit has been broken up into sections based on the article separations, which have been numbered to help with student organization. Lessons have been labeled based on the section(s) they cover, and can take anywhere from one to two months to complete the entire unit.
The unit ends with a cumulative test that is a mixture of multiple choice questions and short response questions, a structure that the students are used to based on the section TDQs assigned throughout the unit. After the test is an extended response question that includes three response questions for students to choose from, a graphic organizer, and the NYS 4-point rubric.
The actual reading has not been included but it can be located online by entering “Eleanor Roosevelt” by William Jay Jacobs in Google or another search engine. The original reading is taken from the Dougall Mittell book, unit seven.
This unit has been tailored to the seventh grade Common Core Learning Standards, but standards from sixth and eighth grade are addressed throughout the unit as well.
