Background for lesson: Political candidates have certain platforms that they believe in, such as education, the environment, the economy, etc.
What would be an important platform for your students to teach them what platforms mean? This is a great lesson for persuasive paragraph writing, as well as to learn about the political system.
For this lesson, students will use language to persuade, describe and verbally reason a why their chosen ‘political platform’ is the best, and therefore the reason that they should be the chosen candidate. To complete the activity, students will choose a ‘platform’ and
then formulate reasons he/she believes his/her platform would be good for the rest of the group. Students should be encouraged to use specific referential vocabulary to describe, provide strong adjectives and , use persuasive language, generate powerful verbs, evoke emotion and attract others to his/her item!
