One of my favorite days of the year… the Election of 1860 simulation! Students are given a role/region of the country they will use throughout the simulation. They learn about the most important issues facing that region and what impacts their political opinions (slavery, Homestead bill, tariffs, westward expansion, transcontinental railroad and more). Students will then “practice” those political positions by reading and ranking their reactions to “Letters to the Editor” from newspapers from across the country. All of this to prep them for the best part… participating in a political forum where they hear speeches from the 4 candidates in the election of 1860. The lesson ends with a class vote… enjoy!
Purchase includes: 4 roe/region overviews, 6 “Letter to the Editor” for students to analyze, 4 candidates speeches, and a note sheet for students to use during the political forum.
