To become familiar with one of the closest and most unusual presidential elections in U.S. history.
1 class period
You can begin this lesson by going over the introductory paragraph with the class which gives a brief summary of the election of 2000.
Students then read through several paragraphs containing more detailed information about this election with missing words, names, and terms. The information is arranged into sections entitled:
• The Presidential Candidates
• The Vote
• Confusion in Florida
• Machine Recount
• Manual Recounts
• Resolving the Crisis
While reading, class members must decide what words, names, and terms are missing from the sentences and put their answers in the appropriate spaces on a crossword puzzle on page 95C. Students will notice that some of the letters in the answers have already been filled in as clues on the puzzle, and can also see how many letters are in the answer.
Teacher Instructions are included, along with a 20-question follow up quiz to measure student progress. The quiz can also be given as a homework assignment or used later on as a review exercise.
