This year is an exciting time to engage students in current affairs! Math and numbers are what its all about. Let's crunch the NUMBERS.Political numbers, that is.
This 13 page unit offers an explanation why the USA has the system of apportionment and electoral college numbers and representatives like we do. Included are a couple maps with the numbers included per state. Also included are the population totals of each state so that students can visually see and mathematically compare the numbers of people in a state and the electors they receive.
Methods by the Census Bureau show how the numbers are computed and several web sites can assist in teaching the students with some hands on manipulations of the electoral maps!
Have some fun with predictions, and following the news on ELECTION DAY!
Also included are the ballot rules, so students can understand if a candidate's name can even appear on their state's ballot. Can people 'throw' their votes away?
