4-PS3-2:
Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.

4-PS3-3: Apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.

Have your students build electrical circuits! Use this packet to teach the basics of electricity. I highly recommended that you order some basic circuit kits for your kids to experiment with. I use 8 kits for my 16 students; each group builds a circuit.

I’ve provided instructions on how to make “Squishy Circuits” with your students! Squishy Circuits uses a conductive dough that students create shapes with. They then use the shapes to build circuits! My students love using Squishy Circuit dough!! It is such a fun way to show how current runs through conductors. It is very easy to show how a short circuit works using the dough (photos of my students’ circuits provided)

This packet includes:

-Ben Franklin’s kite experiment explanation – 5 slides to show your students
-Cool electricity facts – 4 slides to show your students
-student worksheets explaining the basics of an atom, electrons, static electricity: Electrical Safety, Atoms, Opposites Attract, Static Electricity –hat and balloon explanation, Door Shock

Static electricity experiment worksheet – materials needed: balloon, glitter, pompoms, pepper, rice, oregano, pingpong ball, styrofoam ball, aluminum soda can. Predict and experiment – which objects will a charged balloon attract?

-student worksheets explaining lightning, electric current, open and closed circuits, conductors and insulators

-Squishy Circuits Conductive Dough: how to make the dough (materials: salt, flour, cream of tartar, vegetable oil), photo provided, you can purchase individual electrical components at an electrical supply store or purchase the Squishy Circuit kit on- line. The kit includes LED lights and a battery pack with wires. If you do not purchase the kit, any battery pack, wires, bulb electrical kit will work. The current flows through the conductive dough!
