A highly detailed, fun and engaging lesson presentation (81 slides) and associated worksheet that guides students through the commonly assessed GCSE topic of electrolysis. This lesson focuses on the electrolysis of molten salts. The lesson begins by getting students to understand the meaning of electrolysis and the specific compounds (ionic) that can be split by this process. Moving forwards, a quick competition is used to introduce them to the key terms associated with this topic so that the standard of their terminology is high. Students will discover the direction that the ions move once the current is switched on and easy ways to work out what happens in terms of electrons once they are there. There are progress checks throughout the lesson, consisting of exam questions (with mark schemes for self-assessment) as well as more competitions so that understanding is complete.
This lesson is designed for students aged 14 - 18
