This lab covers and provided evidence for mastery of Next Generation Science Standard MS-PS2-3: Ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of electric and magnetic forces.
Students are engaged by the process of creating the electromagnets but also understand and are able to make predictions about the factors that contribute to the strength of the magnets. The conclusion and extension questions will also help students to extend what they have learned to real world engineering and mathematical questions.
You will need to get the following materials for the lab
-4-inch iron or steel nail
-Piece of wire with 1-inch of insulation removed from each end
-At least 2 different sized batteries such as D, AA, AAA or Lantern
-Protective gloves or other insulating material
