Students will explore the properties of an electromagnet. This investigation has three parts.
In part one, they are able to visualize the magnetic field of an electromagnet using lead shavings around a bar magnet. I use a pepper shaker filled with the lead filings in order to shake them out around the magnet.
In part two, the create an electromagnet and use compasses to see the direction of the magnetic field.
In part three, they create an electromagnet using a nail and discover what variables make the magnetic attraction stronger and weaker.
This includes the instruction sheet as well as the student lab report rubric.
The rubric is designed for the ability to use it for data collection and then transfer the information into their interactive notebooks for a full lab report.
